Experienced: unusual construction, intarsia

Color shifts are accomplished by casting on using three balls of yarn that have been started at different points in the color sequence.
The pattern does not specifically say to use intarsia, but it does say to continue working with the 3 balls of yarn to create a color block effect, and you can see the join points in the images, so it is safe to assume intarsia is the technique being used.

Liken was inspired by a beautiful and unique shelf lichen I brought home from San Juan Island, WA, a veritable paradise. I tried to capture the drama and flow of the island setting in the modulations of this design, which uses three colors of yarn and includes colorwork, lace, and beads. I guarantee you won’t be bored!

Deco is a beautiful knitted necklace in two lengths that features cascades of beads in a deliciously sensuous (and easy to knit) design.

Beads are strung onto the yarn before casting on, and short rows are used for shaping. Most of the piece is constructed in garter stitch, which removes the need for concealing any wraps in the short rows.

This design is part of a series meant to instruct the knitter on the joys of combining more than one kind of bead for interesting and beautiful effects.

This triple-layered scarf has been swirling in my head for the better part of a year. It started as an “I wonder if I can …” kind of question. In this case, the question was this: “I wonder if I can knit something with three different layers, all at the same time, without seams or any other tricks?” Could it be done? Yes!

Imagine the scarf as viewed from the end, with three legs. Trace the direction of knitting outward on a leg, then back inwards, then outward again on the next leg, then inwards again – each leg is worked out-then-in, and the legs are worked in order, counterclockwise. I thought I might...

Note: my skein of Knit Circus was marked 420 yards, though the Ravelry database shows 400 yards.

This is the sixth pattern for year 5 of my 7 Small Shawls eBook series.

Chevrione is knit starting from the small end of the triangle to the end, where it is bound off using a picot bind off! It can be worked with lots of beads, a few beads, or no beads at all. Chevrione was specifically designed to use gradients, as the wave pattern shows beautifully with the gradient. This pattern includes both full written and charted instructions, and can easily be modified for size by working extra repeats of Chart B, or omitting repeats of Chart B.

About the series:

Note knitCompanion set-ups can be purchased (in the knitCompanion store) for those who like to use knitCompanion, but do not wish to set up their own charts.

The “giver of delight,” Euterpe was a joyous muse. Lyric poetry and music were her callings, and she is credited by some with the invention of the aulos or double flute. Wherever Euterpe went, she brought joy and happiness to her surroundings.

Euterpe’s shawl is joyous and celebratory, one version in garter stitch and the other in stockinette stitch and embellished with beads. The top of the shawl is knit without a spine, using a circular increase scheme, and then - as the lace border takes shape - a triangular form emerges in the lovely smocked lace pattern.

Colorful dots and lines call to mind Necco’s candy button strips, a favorite of my childhood. This design brings out the best in a high-contrast skein of hand-dyed yarn.

Necco is worked in the round. Turned hems feature the contrast color on the inside lining.

Delicate and lacy, this side-to-side scarf is wonderfully multipurpose! With wearable options as a neckerchief, small shoulder shawl, hair kerchief or even a swimsuit coverup, Caroline is perfect for gift giving -let the recipient style it in their own unique way! The chic, inimalistic diamond motif is not only easy to work but right on trend, and due to the slight bias of the stitch pattern, lends a slightly asymmetrical look to the finished piece. As the ice melts and the thaw frees up water from its winter rest, placid babbling brooks turn into streams and rivulets into rushing creeks. The water runs down over the rocky hillside towards the deep, launches itself off the cliff and is suspended in free fall, splashes and foams on rocks and transforms into thousand droplets of delicate mist that catch the sunlight and throw a rainbow back at the sun as thank you.

We had a really fun KAL starting April 21st 2014, the thread is a bit more quiet these days, but there is still a lot of great info in it, and help if you need!

This shawl is inspired by a magnificent waterfall, Haifoss, said to be the second highest in Iceland.

Worked top down, this crescent shaped shawl with optional beading, has simple faggoting running in lines down the main body of the shawl, representing the creek and waterfall, the zig zag of water hitting the stones and creating spray and the bubbles and foam deep below, ending in a deep cut lace edge, as the water runs off in new found creeks towards the bigger...

In the haze of an early summer morning, before the whole world awakes, you’re taking the early train out. Walking down the country lane, glad to have packed light, and grateful for the breezy summer top that lets you feel the cool air.

Tee is worked in the round from the neck down with romantic lace detailing on the softly rounded neckline, and eyelets at the bottom hem and sleeve cuff.
For a better fit, short rows are worked across the back and shoulders to gently drop the neckline in the front. Darts on the front and back add shape at the waist. For a less fitted look, some or all of the shaping can easily be omitted.
I really liked working with this cotton wool blend yarn. The cotton gives the yarn drape but the wool content gives it structure and prevents the usual relaxing and stretching that are often found in cotton yarns. No only is the wool/cotton blend...

I was fortunate to have Dream in Color Yarns send me some yarn to design with. This included the colorful “Love is Love” gradient pack. Nine skeinettes at 75 yards each in a literal rainbow of colors. I designed a spectacular set on knitted goodness, which I appropriately named “The Colors of Love”. Designed to showcase the amazing colors of the rainbow set, the shawl is worked in stripes and garter stitch from the inside out before being sectioned off and wings are added to grow two separate ways, all while being surrounded by an I-Cord border for durability and clean edge.

All the proceeds go toward Seeds of Peace, a program that teaches leadership skills to international...

Dream in Color will be donating 100% of pattern sales to Seeds of Peace, an organization whose mission states:

“We inspire and cultivate new generations of leaders to transform conflict.”
This pattern uses a modified Japanese lace stitch that creates scalloped ripples in the fabric, intarsia for a border, and garter ridges to divide sections of color.

Super wearable, easy to knit and sooooo soft, the Stratify cowl is ideal for keeping your neck warm with style. Two colors, a little bit of ribbing, and lots of satisfying stockinette is all it takes to knit it up. The simplicity of the piece allows it to be worn several ways: folded in half so the outside is one color and the inside another, pulled up over your head for an easy indoor/outdoor transition, or the simple but stylish slouch look. The hardest part may be deciding on the colors!
