This hat is such a satisfying knit that you’ll want to work up more than one. The lace pattern is simple to work and quick to memorize. It’s a great take-along project that you can work on anywhere. I’ve also designed a cowl (#702) and fingerless mitts (#704) to match (#702-4 is the whole 3-piece set).

NOTE: To fit average adult; brim will easily stretch to approximately 22” (56 cm).

NOTE: To fit average adult; Mitts can stretch to approximately 9” (23 cm) hand circumference.

These fingerless mitts are just the thing when you want warmth but need your fingers free. They’re a quick knit, so make them in a bunch of colors and give them as gifts to friends and family. The lace pattern is really easy – just a yarnover and a decrease every other round. Wear these with the hat (#703) and cowl (#702) for a complete set (#702-4 has all 3 pieces together in one pattern).

This is a very simple lace pattern to work – just a single yarnover and decrease every other round. The cowl is large enough to comfortably wrap around your neck twice. You can also wear it down over your shoulders as a wrap or up over you head as a hood if you’d like. Or make a smaller cowl if you prefer a closer fit (see the Note under Finished Measurements). Wear it with the matching hat (#703) and fingerless mitts (#704) (#702-4 is the whole 3-piece set).

The cable pattern used in this hat starts out with ordinary 2 over 2 cables. But then each of the cables shares a stitch with the cables on either side of it, resulting in branches that intertwine from bottom to top. Instructions are included for reducing the height of the hat slightly if you prefer.

The body of this cardigan is worked in one piece from the bottom edge to the armholes, then back and fronts are worked separately to the shoulders. The sleeves are worked flat from the bottom up, then sewn into the armholes. The front bands/collar are worked at the same time as the body, and the collar is shaped at the shoulders using short rows, then joined at the back and sewn along the back neck edge. The cable pattern is given in both written and charted formats.

These Twined Knitted (or Two-End) Gloves are made with the Swedish technique Tvåändsstickning, which developed in Sweden around the 17th century in the Dalarna region. By utilizing a yarn from each end of the ball and using the yarns to work alternate stitches, a thick, warm fabric with embossed motifs can be made. The Swedish knitters used Z-plied yarns; yarns spun in an S direction, then plied together in a Z direction, so that when worked in twined knitting, the yarns would open up and soften, rather than get harder and more twisted. I recommend Black Water Abbey yarns for this project (they are Z-plied) although...

I have been fascinated by the lovely Scottish tradition of Sanquhar gloves since I first saw a photograph of them. Drawn to their apparent complexity, I was happily surprised at the simple logic of their construction. Due to their fixed layout, these gloves are best knitted in different sizes by changing the needle and yarn size. I could not resist playing with the squares, while leaving the basic architecture alone. Now that I live in Vermont and winter is always around the corner, I chose little pine trees and snowflakes to grace my gloves that will keep me warm in beautiful, but frigid, New...

This gansey is Beth’s interpretation of a Scottish Eriskay
gansey from Rae Compton’s book, The Complete
Book of Traditional Guernsey and Jersey Knitting.

FEATURED TECHNIQUES

  • The Channel Island Cast-On
  • Circular Construction
  • Garter Stitch Alphabet for Initials
  • The Perpendicular Shoulder Join
  • Shoulder Strap Neck Gussets
  • Optional Short Row Shaping

Note from Beth…I highly recommend this sweater be knitted in Frangipani Guernsey yarn, or one of the other traditional Guernsey yarns. The result is more traditional, the motifs will be clear and crisp and the sweater will last a lifetime!

This dress is knitted in the style of the British gansey. It begins with a split garter stitch welt at the bottom hem, knitted flat. Once the welts develop into side vents, the work is joined in the round. The skirt is worked circularly with gentle decreases to the hip, then decreased a bit more to the waist. At the waist, the body is slightly increased and the patterning begins, including the underarm gussets. The body is split into halves at the armhole and the front and back are knitted flat. The shoulders are joined with neck gussets, and the...

My final project for the TGKA Master Hand Knitting Program is a modern Aran design with a Celtic flair. This bottom-up pullover sweater, in Sally Melville’s attractive “balance point” length, is worked flat and features horizontal braided bands around the bottom of the body and the set-in sleeves. The bands, edged in slipped stitches, are worked first then stitches picked up to continue knitting the body and sleeves. Stitches picked up around the wide portrait neck are worked with Lily Chin’s join-as-you-go technique (full instructions and tutorial link included) and finished with a single braid with a slipped stitch edge, framing the face.

The motif edge is inspired by a favorite Native tapestry from Two Grey Hills, NM. This luxury shawl is worked in two great yarns from the Fibre. Co.

The Garter Stitch body is joined modularly to the rectangular motif section on the long edge opposite the picot CO. This is a great project for a luxury lace/light fingering weight yarn held double or a sport weight yarn held single.

Yardage for light fingering weight HELD DOUBLE is approximately 1580 yds/1445 m (shown in THE FIBRE CO Meadow, color Aster. Three skeins of this yarn are required. The gauge for this shawl is 19 sts and 38 rows in 4”/10 cm in Garter Stitch with yarn held double, before blocking. The motif...

This pattern is part of the Indie Designer Gift-a-Long 2016.

As I was refining and knitting my latest shawl pattern, I attended a beautiful wedding on Whitefish Lake in northern Montana. The sky was clear blue, then sky and mountains turned shades of lavender and purple as the sunset progressed. The “hills” in the lace pattern will always remind me of the distant landscape and the couple’s special day!

My Sunset shawl is an asymmetric triangle, starting with two cast on stitches, predominantly in Garter stitch. Garter stitch stripes, German short rows and my sunset-colored mountain lace are its features. The fingering-weight hand...

Tucked within the folds of this velvety soft jacket lie narrow bands of jewel toned, hand painted cashmere. Their opulence is rivaled by the deep, resonant plum color that takes center stage. Not to be outdone, the jewel tones make a concluding statement in the tufts that adorn the back of the slender collar.

Semi-fitted, sleekly tapered and mid-length when worn in the usual manner, this design can also be worn upside down and fastened to create a waist length jacket with a gently gathered shawl collar of dramatic proportion. Plum Perfect is perfectly luscious either way.

The Conifer Scarf and the Conifer Cowl are both knit with a great two color stitch patterns that create a reversible fabric with no ‘wrong side’. The stitch pattern on both the scarf and the cowl look identical but are worked a little differently based on working flat or in the round. Pick more masculine colors for the guys in your life, or a more feminine combo for the gals … either way this super soft yarn will feel amazing next to the skin!

When our house was built, in the 1840’s, these northern Illinois woods were still inhabited by peaceable native families - hunters and gatherers mainly, and if one (me!) is particularly lucky, their arrowheads may yet (just this past summer!) be found along the banks of our beautiful Kinnikinnick creek. This scarf is the first in a collection of three knitted accessories which celebrates our gentle and nature-loving predecessors …

Arrowheads form a lovely and reversible basketweave pattern in this gansey-style scarf with attractive angled ends and optional tassel trim.

Knit from end to end with a simple knit and purl stitch pattern. The tassel and crocheted trim is added later. A video tutorial of the trim may be viewed at...

There is nothing more delightful than a newborn baby; the soft, sweet smell of their head, their pink rosy cheeks, their tiny little fingers, and their pudgy miniature feet. Too small yet to carry them from place to place, babies kick their feet when they are happy and grab them when they are bored.
This is the perfect time to cover their tootsies in our sock puppets. Created small for feet...

UPDATE 10/23/2011: Pattern revised to include easier-to-read charts and instructions for 64-st and 72-st sizes.

Random fact about me: I LOVE paisley. I don’t know why, but I do and have done for a long time now. I am also determined to figure out how to knit cables in a paisley pattern to make myself a cardigan with the design. Alas, I have yet to figure it out (but I WILL!!!). In the mean time, this design sort of reminded me of paisley (hence the name).

When I bought this yarn off of someone on Ravelry I had a different stitch design in mind, but it didn’t work out. Instead, after a morning of fiddling I came up with...

So here’s the story with this pattern. I bought this yarn to try and enter a pattern into Berroco’s sock design contest last month but I ran out of time and then got completely side-tracked with my Irate Squirrel Sock idea. I thought and thought about this yarn, the problems with it (the lack of stretch due to its alpaca and nylon content, and it’s lack of stitch definition - not to mention its complete inability to photograph well), and I decided texture with some give was the way to go.

I had seen a stitch pattern similar to this in a book but the one in the book was way too...

This headband was a joy to knit. It takes only one ball of Knit Picks Swish worsted. As much as I love the Swish worsted yarn I find that it is slightly thinner than a true worsted weight wool. Please keep that in mind if you decide to substitute with a different yarn.

This headband is worked flat and seamed together using a three needle bind off.

Enjoy!

This lovely dress has a great swing and swish to it, hence the name. Swish is crocheted from the top down in a simple shell and mesh stitch pattern. It is worked in two pieces to the armhole then joined and worked back and forth in the round. The increases at the hip give the hem extra circumference providing the quintessential swish. Great with leggings, jeans, or over a maxi skirt, this is a truly versatile piece.

Sanquhar is a town in Scotland, noted for its distinctive two-color knitting. I have knitted Sanquhar socks and gloves in the past, and thought a cowl would be a perfect “sampler” project to showcase many different motifs. I charted most of these motifs from looking at old photographs of Sanquhar knitting, and may have made a minor change to traditional motifs here or there. All of the “main” patterns are based on 11 by 11 stitch squares. I alternate “all-over” background patterns in between each main pattern motif.

This project is designed as a cowl, starting with a provisional cast-on and knit in the round so you can graft the beginning stitches to the end stitches to make a perfect tube. You could also make a scarf, binding off each end separately.

The cowl is created by casting on the circumference of the cowl provisionally, knitting one side, working a turning round, then working the other side. Once completed you will remove the provisional cast-on and place the beginning stitches on a circular needle. Folding the piece in half at the fold line, you will either graft the beginning stitches to the end stitches or work a three-needle bind-off.

There are many many color combinations you could use. I think it would be lovely in a pink variegated with a brown solid. Or how about a gradient set with black? Or black and white? The possibilities are almost endless. The inside is worked in a simpler pattern than the outside.

The pattern is...

Let it Snow Hat will be your favorite go-to pattern. I say this often, but this IS true.

I was inspired by the large, twinkling snowflakes that made their way to the warm ground. Melting instantly.

A cozy, knit hat pattern that is perfect for that one skein of worsted weight yarn that’s been sitting there looking for a “home”.

You will love how this pattern flows from the first stitch. Knit in the round, the lace design is easy to follow. The large rolled up brim is versatile enough that you can customize it to any length.

It knits up quick and can be made for a tween (model is 9 years old) to an adult size. I truly enjoyed every stitch of this project.

I know you will too!

Rich colors and a sweet Flower makes this super soft hat a fun way to celebrate the colder months. The plush merino fiber makes it extra cozy, while the oversized button provides a fun design element to personalize your style. Cute, yet sophisticated, this quick knit is sized for both kids and adults. So you can make one for yourself and one for the “little me” in your life.

This pattern is a quick knit project using bulky yarn and large needles. It creates a comfortable slouchy beanie. This hat will fit a child’s head (18” - 20”) and an adult’s head (21” - 23”).

Autumn Fingerless Mitts

From your first scarf, to a hat, to socks, now fingerless mitts.

Simple design. Simple detailing.

This pattern can be knit over the weekend, or span of a couple of days. I used a silken DK weight wool/silk blend. It will stretch to fit most any size. It is one of the most addicting designs ever. A fun squiggly pattern repeats, and just plain ol’ stockinette. The outcome is fun, comfortable, yet offers the cute accessory piece. This pattern doesn’t have a thumb gusset, so you can slip these on either hand.

Have fun with this simple pattern. I’m sure you’ll get plenty of compliments.

Just a little twisted, but that’s what adds to the charm (or so we all tell ourselves). This pattern is the perfect introduction to cables in the round with a fabulous stretchy rib. It is quite fun to knit with hand-painted yarn, as it throws the colors around with just the right “twist.”

Sometimes my brain screams “NO MORE SOCKS!” so I am forced to come up with a new use for the many skeins of fingering-weight yarn lying around. I hold a deep love for lacy shawls, yet I needed something simple and worthy of year-round wear. Thus, Julia’s Lace was conceived - a stylish scarf that merges the cozy essence of triangular shawls with interesting, yet not overwhelming, herringbone lace

To knit this scarf, you need to be able (or eager to learn) to read lace charts, follow simultaneous instructions, use the cable cast-on, knit, purl, decrease, and work back and forth in rows. For those interested, I have a quick tutorial video of the Cable Cast-On at my blog.

In college, my best friend, Nancy, was my fashion guru. She had an impeccable grasp of the classics! It was Nancy who turned me on to the beauty of Frye Campus boots, camel wool reefer coats and black knife-pleated skirts. And she had this enviable little gray merino knitted vest that looked so perfect with everything from her Cat Stevens T-shirt and bohemian peasant tops to vintage silk blouses with pearl buttons.

That vest had been in the back of my mind for years. I always wanted one like it, and finally! here it is, updated for today, but as classic as ever. And now you can have one too.

This stockinette-stitch vest has fine ribbing details and pretty cable decreases. A slightly slanted buttonband creates a subtle A-line shape, for a very...
