A cuddly blanket can help beat the blues, especially when it sports plenty of cool color and sleek texture. Knit in colorway #40—a mix
of blue, aqua, purple, emerald and wine—it’s worked in narrow alternating bands of garter stitch and k1, p3 ribbing. A knit-in border of
garter stitch keeps the edges neat.

Knit in a simple two-color slip-stitch pattern, a dotted scarf flaunts the cool navy, purple, turquoise and brown spectrum of Silk Garden Lite colorway #2088. A coordinating solid shade, Silk Garden Lite Solo #2003 Violet, offers fluctuating degrees of contrast, lending a subtle sense of motion to the overall patterning. The side edgings are knit
intarsia-style using Silk Garden Lite Solo, creating a border continuous with the garter-stitch bands that are worked at each end.

The bold bands of lime, olive and jade in colorway #332 might catch this easy-to-knit blanket some envious glances. It’s knit in a simple pattern of wide garter and stockinette blocks, with a garter-stitch border knit in as the blanket is worked. The first stitch of every row is slipped to create a trim edge.

Designed by Margie Kieper

Classic granny triangles play up all the angles of Silk Garden Sock colorway #415—a bright mélange of peach, pink, purple, green and copper—in Kieper’s trapezoidal shawl. To form the versatile shape, six small and three large triangles are crocheted from the center out and assembled in finishing. The fine-weight gauge offers gorgeous drape when the shawl is worn about the shoulders and just the right amount of slouch when it’s looped into an oversize bandana.

Designed by Donna Childs
Difficulty: 3.5 (2 users)

As engaging to style as it is to crochet, Childs’s spiral shawl is worked in wedges formed by single, half-double and double crochet stitches. The sawtooth edge is shaped with short rows that are offset at the beginning of the row by chain-stitch extensions; the technique creates the narrow crescent shape. A narrow single-crochet band reinforces the top edge. Silk Garden Lite colorway #2093 adds drama with bright flashes of turquoise, pink and orange against dark gray.

Designed by Nirmal Khalsa
Difficulty: 0.0 (0 users)

Marled shades of coral, silver, ocher and mauve glide across Khalsa’s chunky scarf composed of mitered squares. Quick and easy to crochet in bulky-weight Hakone, each block is worked in extended single crochet with double decreases forming the diagonal center spine. The pattern alternates larger and smaller squares, which offsets the sequence in colorway #8 Shakespeare in Love for a dynamic look. To customize the length, simply add or subtract squares.

Designed by Cristina Mershon
Difficulty: 2.0 (1 user)

Crocheted side to side in two pieces, Mershon’s poncho—cloud-light yet toasty warm in Rainbow Roll—gets added drape from the main pattern of single-crochet mesh. Bands of single-crochet ribbing form the deep lower border, transforming colorway #1015 navy, taupe and pink into sleek vertical stripes. The extra-plush turtleneck is worked separately in single-crochet rib and sewn to the neckline in finishing, while the sides are left open for ease of movement.

Mershon’s striking duster vest belies a wonderfully simple construction. Crocheted in Kureopatora colorway #1001, a high-contrast blend of black, silver, blue and seashell pink, it’s worked sideways in one piece with slip stitches and crochet chains forming the armholes. The allover pattern of shell-stitch mesh alternates rows of single and double crochet, creating a structured fabric with plenty of drape. The top edge folds over naturally to form the shawl collar.

Taking a cue from condo knitting, Kieper’s infinity scarf stripes super-bulky Rainbow Roll colorway #1011 pink, purple and orange and fine-weight Silk Garden Sock Solo #7 Red—with opulent results. The simple pattern of double-crochet clusters, worked in two rows at a time across the right and wrong sides, flaunts the sumptuous interplay of color, loft and texture. The ends are crocheted together. A tasseled chain cinches the scarf, creating a fabulous finish.

Channels of single ribbing run the length of Zukaite’s slim boat-neck tunic, offering functional embellishment that complements the sporty side vents and raglan yoke. A La Mode colorway #1 Cottontail, a wear-with-anything neutral, shows off the patterning to best effect. Subtle blush detail appears at the collar and inset pockets, where
the single-rib trims are tipped with tubular applied I-cord in #11 Delicate Rose. I-cord at the lower edge completes the look.

Payson keeps it simple, setting the spotlight on her textured cardigan’s opulent royal colors. Representing an original approach to colorblocking, Hatta’s cabled raglan pullover and scarf pair the tweedy tones of Silk Garden Solo with a rich array of traditional cable patterns. Colorways #8 Plum—used at the sweater’s upper half—and #18 Grapevine create a subtle duotone effect, while the scarf, knit in #17 Lavender, adds bright contrast. Edged with double ribbing, the scarf features the same small cable motifs that flank the sweater’s central diamond cable.

Knit in deep blue hues, a medley of two-color patterns—among them, hound’s tooth, chevron, pinstripe and garter mosaic—recalls the look of oriental indigo patchwork. Solid sapphire Silk Garden Solo #3 Royal anchors the blue, cerulean, jade and ocher shades of Silk Garden colorway #373. The poncho is constructed from six long panels, each consisting of seven pattern blocks; midway through the centermost panels, the blocks narrow, creating the open-front silhouette.

Clean, simple lines allow a vivid hue to shine. Cedarholm’s textured tee, knit in A La Mode colorway #16 Lavish Lavender, is worked in one piece from cuff to cuff, with cast-on and bound-off stitches shaping the body and sleeves. At the piece’s center, an inset is knit using scrap yarn; the stitches are released onto a circular needle and bound off in finishing to create the mirrored deep-V neckline. Garter ridges add interest while forming self-finished edges.

Pretty in Silk Garden Solo colorway #10 Pink, Zukaite’s open-front vest is designed for a flowing fit: The fronts taper from the double-rib hemline, creating the draped silhouette. Single ribbing trims the armholes at the deep shaped shoulders. The Fair Isle front bands are knit using #2 Light Grey, with highlights in #18 Grapevine. FiberWild! is proud to present Amy’s Zimmerman’s River Stones Wristlets!

This is the first published pattern by our own Amy Zimmerman - better known here in the office as Vera (we already had an Amy). An accomplished knitter and crocheter in her own right, Amy’s a self-described history nerd with a penchant for deciphering antique patterns. She also lives in chilly Illinois, so her hands get cold. We asked if she’d share the wristlets pattern she developed over lunch hours here at FiberWild!

This pattern is currently available exclusively through the FiberWild! Ravelry Store and FiberWild.com.

Keep your hands warm and your skin supple with these simple but lovely wristlets inspired by the ripples of water flowing over stones. These charming wristlets provide warmth and protection while freeing your fingers to type, text, turn pages, or a thousand other things that gloves make...

Incendiary is a sideways, shallow, triangular shawlette. It has a waving flame lace pattern that is tailor-made for variegated yarns. The Campfire yarn from Zen Yarn Garden goes from black to yellow, with all the reds and oranges of flames in between, and it just sings in this pattern.

Incendiary is debuting at Stitches West 2016 with Camp Yarnover Truck. The pattern and yarn are available right there where the Yarnover Truck is camped out on the showroom floor!

This charming tunic is simply perfect for all the young ladies in your life. Soft, flowery cables adorn the bodice with hints of lace and delightful in texture. Delicate crochet chains decorate the armholes, while the fun length gives just enough twirling room! It’s named after my own little Sophie (the model) and compliments her sweetly feminine childhood.

My patterns are filled with beautiful photos, easy to read text, eye-catching layout, and everything you need to know in order to complete the project. Sophie Tunic has written instructions, but the stitch patterns themselves are only charted. Also note that measurements are provided in standard and metric units.

Let the air wrap you in its arms when you’re wearing: CERISARA.

This is a style that uses DK weight yarn bumped up to a worsted weight gauge to make a fabric with gorgeous, but not out-of-control, drape and stitch definition.

The first in my 10th shawl collection inspired by mosaics of textures. All patterns in the collection will feature a variety of stitch patterns.

The Quadrille Shawl was inspired by my recent Quadrille Sock design, it combines simple cables, garter, ribbing and k/p stitch patterns to create a very interesting and elegant textural piece. The pattern includes instructions for a small (one-skein, 400 yard) version as well as a larger (two-skein, 750 yard) version. The dimensions are 14(20)” deep, 31(48)” center edge to tip for the small (large) versions respectively.

My first mult-colored shawl! Meteor Shower is the third shawl in my “Astronomy” shawl collection.

This is a highly adjustable pattern that comes with instructions for a two-skein symmetrical triangular shawl, a two-skein asymmetrical shawl, and a one-skein asymmetrical shawl. The way the pattern is written, it can easily be up- or down-sized to your liking. The pattern is worked sideways and features a knitted on i-cord that creates a nice, curved neckline on one side with a blackberry stitch border on the other. The final edge is worked perpendicular to the body of the shawl which means very little bind-off is...

This is a fresh new take on my Coriolis architecture, which first appeared in my book, New Pathways for Sock Knitters. This design offers a menu of choices for the leg: a diagonal ribbing can follow the Coriolis band from ankle to cuff, or the diagonal ribbing can begin later, a few inches before the top of the leg. For a Sweet Coriolis in its purest form, omit the rib altogether.

I think the Sweet Tomato Heel offers the best of all foundations for the Coriolis design and am very pleased to offer this new variation.

These socks are the third sock featured in my eBook, Cat’s Sweet Tomato Heel Socks.

While I was teaching at Needlework Unlimited in Minneapolis, Minnesota, they received their first shipment of a locally hand-dyed Blue-faced Leicester sock yarn. Hardly a skein of this seductive yarn was left by the end of my workshops. It’s slightly over-spun (which bodes well for durability) and has lovely stitch definition. The moonlit colors inspired this delicate, lacy sock, which includes instructions on fitting a larger calf.

Please join my new group, Cat’s Sweet Tomato Heels, for discussion and answers to any questions you may have.

These socks are the fifth sock featured in my eBook, Cat’s Sweet Tomato Heel Socks.

The Hither & Yon Socks are an easy knit, even if you’ve never added beads to knitting before (I include a video tutorial). The stitch texture is equally beautiful without the beads, as you can see in the video, so do leave off the beads if you prefer. The socks shown here feature clear beads on the front (which take on the color of the yarn) and multi-color beads on the back (a surprise for passersby). You could, of course, use one color everywhere. You can choose the toe-up (page 2) or top-down (page 6) version. If you enjoy working two socks at a time on two circular needles or one long circular needle, instructions starting on page 8 will show you how to knit any Sweet Tomato Heel...

These socks are the second sock featured in my eBook, Cat’s Sweet Tomato Heel Socks..

Hidden Treasure Pocket Socks may be knit toe-up or top-down, are easily fitted to any shape foot, and are a good introduction to the Sweet Tomato Heel (you can always leave off the pockets if you wish; then you will have a simple ribbed sock). If you make all four pockets, you can actually fit a cell phone, credit cards, and cash in your socks, and won’t need to carry a purse. The hidden pockets use the easy insertion method from my 2009 book, Personal Footprints for Insouciant Sock Knitters, and may be worked with leftover yarn.

My Sweet Tomato Heel emerged last winter after several days of sitting beside the wood stove with my mother while trying to fiddle my way towards a new short-row heel....

This is the 4th sock in my eBook, CAT’S SWEET TOMATO HEEL SOCKS, and it introduces the Padded Sweet Tomato Heel for the first time.

A Padded Sweet Tomato Heel curves the traditionally straight columns of heel stitch into a beautiful shell-like cup. I suggest first trying one of the other patterns in this collection in order to appreciate the simplicity of the original Sweet Tomato Heel method. Then, adding columns of slipped stitches to create the Padded Heel will seem natural.

I am always on the look-out for really great sock yarn. It has to be springy (to produce elastic fabric and be ergonomically kind to the knitter), have plenty of twist and three or more...

You can use odds and ends of chunky wool from your yarn basket to make this warm, colorful hat OR use Kool-Aid to dye natural-colored wool to give this basic toque a bright and funky look. The I-cord tails that decorate the top hat are approximately 2 inches long, but you can knit them as long (or as short) as you like. You could even make them very long and sew bells on the ends or tie them into knots. DK or sport weight yarn may be used holding two strands together throughout (double the yardage).

Fun and easy slip stitch knitting pattern

The pattern is designed so that two hats can be made from two skeins (one large and one small) where the main and contracts colors mirror. In the samples shown, the Enchanted Forest (Green) is the main color on one hat and Snowflake (white) the main color on the other. The hat is worked in the round and you will carry the unused color by bringing the new yarn under the old.

The hat can be worn with the ribbing unfolded for a longer hat or fold the ribbing over for a shorter hat. This is a special design by Patty that features the softness and body of the Water Street yarn.

Killington is one of the better-known ski towns in Vermont. At one point, the Vermont Sheep and Wool Festival was held there. I tried to convince them that my very woolly Standard Poodles were actually sheep so I could bring them with me, but no luck. This sweater is the perfect après-anything pullover, that will keep you toasty warm and comfortable while you relax with a good book (or dog) by the fire. As wth all Basix patterns, tips and measurements are given for those who want to tweak some of the shaping elements.

This is a top-down, set-in sleeve pattern, with short-row shaping to shape the sleeve cap (instructions on how to work short rows are included). There are also tips on how to customize your fit.

The city of Boulder, Colorado is a magnet for those who love outdoor activities of all kinds. This hoodie will become your go-to sweater when you’ve just got to be out enjoying life.

The pouch pocket is easy to work - knit the top of the pocket with 2 strands of yarn, divide the doubled stitches to work the pocket facing and body separately until they’re done, then knit them together to close the bottom of the pocket. The hood doesn’t just look good — it’s large enough to be comfortable, and the ties ensure that it will stay in place no matter how hard the wind blows. You’ll be...

This was the first hat I designed when I decided it might be fun to try designing hats. I loved the process from beginning to end, and couldn’t help designing a bunch more hats. The stitch pattern is very basic; it’s a 2-stitch column that shifts 1 stitch to the left every other round. You can change the length of the hat to whatever you want it to be.

This scarf is completely reversible; there is no right or wrong side. I chose three colors of yarn and kept knitting with one until it was nearly all gone, then changed to the next color. You can work up this scarf in any weight yarn you choose. Of course a differing yarn weight will require different needles and will result in different measurements, so keep that in mind when choosing a substitute yarn.

The waist and bust shaping and deep v-neck of this cardigan flatter your waistline, while the one-button closure gives you room in the hips. The body is worked in one piece to the armholes, then divided to the shoulders.

This is such an easy hat to knit, but pair the pattern with an interesting yarn with a lot of color, and it turns into something truly lovely. I’ve knit this up in several different colorways, and love to see how the color works with the stitch pattern. You won’t be able to stop at just one!

I used this stitch pattern in a men’s vest (Textured V-Neck Vest #151) a while ago. I’ve knit up a bunch of these hats (they’re addictive!) and found it to be an easy pattern to memorize, one that yields a really nice texture without a lot of work.

This hat is such a satisfying knit that you’ll want to work up more than one. The lace pattern is simple to work and quick to memorize. It’s a great take-along project that you can work on anywhere. I’ve also designed a cowl (#702) and fingerless mitts (#704) to match (#702-4 is the whole 3-piece set).

NOTE: To fit average adult; brim will easily stretch to approximately 22” (56 cm).

NOTE: To fit average adult; Mitts can stretch to approximately 9” (23 cm) hand circumference.

These fingerless mitts are just the thing when you want warmth but need your fingers free. They’re a quick knit, so make them in a bunch of colors and give them as gifts to friends and family. The lace pattern is really easy – just a yarnover and a decrease every other round. Wear these with the hat (#703) and cowl (#702) for a complete set (#702-4 has all 3 pieces together in one pattern).

This is a very simple lace pattern to work – just a single yarnover and decrease every other round. The cowl is large enough to comfortably wrap around your neck twice. You can also wear it down over your shoulders as a wrap or up over you head as a hood if you’d like. Or make a smaller cowl if you prefer a closer fit (see the Note under Finished Measurements). Wear it with the matching hat (#703) and fingerless mitts (#704) (#702-4 is the whole 3-piece set).

The cable pattern used in this hat starts out with ordinary 2 over 2 cables. But then each of the cables shares a stitch with the cables on either side of it, resulting in branches that intertwine from bottom to top. Instructions are included for reducing the height of the hat slightly if you prefer.

The body of this cardigan is worked in one piece from the bottom edge to the armholes, then back and fronts are worked separately to the shoulders. The sleeves are worked flat from the bottom up, then sewn into the armholes. The front bands/collar are worked at the same time as the body, and the collar is shaped at the shoulders using short rows, then joined at the back and sewn along the back neck edge. The cable pattern is given in both written and charted formats.

These Twined Knitted (or Two-End) Gloves are made with the Swedish technique Tvåändsstickning, which developed in Sweden around the 17th century in the Dalarna region. By utilizing a yarn from each end of the ball and using the yarns to work alternate stitches, a thick, warm fabric with embossed motifs can be made. The Swedish knitters used Z-plied yarns; yarns spun in an S direction, then plied together in a Z direction, so that when worked in twined knitting, the yarns would open up and soften, rather than get harder and more twisted. I recommend Black Water Abbey yarns for this project (they are Z-plied) although I have...

I have been fascinated by the lovely Scottish tradition of Sanquhar gloves since I first saw a photograph of them. Drawn to their apparent complexity, I was happily surprised at the simple logic of their construction. Due to their fixed layout, these gloves are best knitted in different sizes by changing the needle and yarn size. I could not resist playing with the squares, while leaving the basic architecture alone. Now that I live in Vermont and winter is always around the corner, I chose little pine trees and snowflakes to grace my gloves that will keep me warm in beautiful, but frigid, New...

This gansey is Beth’s interpretation of a Scottish Eriskay
gansey from Rae Compton’s book, The Complete
Book of Traditional Guernsey and Jersey Knitting.

FEATURED TECHNIQUES

  • The Channel Island Cast-On
  • Circular Construction
  • Garter Stitch Alphabet for Initials
  • The Perpendicular Shoulder Join
  • Shoulder Strap Neck Gussets
  • Optional Short Row Shaping

Note from Beth…I highly recommend this sweater be knitted in Frangipani Guernsey yarn, or one of the other traditional Guernsey yarns. The result is more traditional, the motifs will be clear and crisp and the sweater will last a lifetime!

This dress is knitted in the style of the British gansey. It begins with a split garter stitch welt at the bottom hem, knitted flat. Once the welts develop into side vents, the work is joined in the round. The skirt is worked circularly with gentle decreases to the hip, then decreased a bit more to the waist. At the waist, the body is slightly increased and the patterning begins, including the underarm gussets. The body is split into halves at the armhole and the front and back are knitted flat. The shoulders are joined with neck gussets, and the three-quarter sleeves...

My final project for the TGKA Master Hand Knitting Program is a modern Aran design with a Celtic flair. This bottom-up pullover sweater, in Sally Melville’s attractive “balance point” length, is worked flat and features horizontal braided bands around the bottom of the body and the set-in sleeves. The bands, edged in slipped stitches, are worked first then stitches picked up to continue knitting the body and sleeves. Stitches picked up around the wide portrait neck are worked with Lily Chin’s join-as-you-go technique (full instructions and tutorial link included) and finished with a single braid with a slipped stitch edge, framing the face.

The motif edge is inspired by a favorite Native tapestry from Two Grey Hills, NM. This luxury shawl is worked in two great yarns from the Fibre. Co.

The Garter Stitch body is joined modularly to the rectangular motif section on the long edge opposite the picot CO. This is a great project for a luxury lace/light fingering weight yarn held double or a sport weight yarn held single.

Yardage for light fingering weight HELD DOUBLE is approximately 1580 yds/1445 m (shown in THE FIBRE CO Meadow, color Aster. Three skeins of this yarn are required. The gauge for this shawl is 19 sts and 38 rows in 4”/10 cm in Garter Stitch with yarn held double, before blocking. The motif edge is 41...

This pattern is part of the Indie Designer Gift-a-Long 2016.

As I was refining and knitting my latest shawl pattern, I attended a beautiful wedding on Whitefish Lake in northern Montana. The sky was clear blue, then sky and mountains turned shades of lavender and purple as the sunset progressed. The “hills” in the lace pattern will always remind me of the distant landscape and the couple’s special day!

My Sunset shawl is an asymmetric triangle, starting with two cast on stitches, predominantly in Garter stitch. Garter stitch stripes, German short rows and my sunset-colored mountain lace are its features. The fingering-weight hand dyed yarn...
