What's Old is New Again With This “Roaring '20s” Deco Hat …
Featuring Mountain Colors' Crazyfoot and Perspectives Yarn Packs
Similar to a cloche, the mid-1920s featured a turban style hat which was typically evening wear rather than a daytime hat. Our design captures the “Great Gatsby” era by combining modular knitting with awesome colors from our friends at Mountain Colors!
Flappers like options! So we made two variations of the same pattern … the Abalone Shell Hat is knit with a single skein of Mountain Colors' Crazyfoot yarn, and the Nautilus Shell Hat uses a five-color Crazyfoot Perspectives Yarn Pack. Both hats are knit the same way. But to make the knitting easy, we created two patterns to highlight when to switch colors using the five-color Perspectives Yarn Pack.

Abalone Shell Hat or
Nautilus Shell Hat
by Amy Loberg
The turban is knit by creating five tiers of four triangular “shell” pieces. Each tier builds on the previous tier by picking up stitches, resulting in the round hat shape. The dome is topped off with a circular crown piece, completing the turban … it sounds a little challenging, but once you get started (and with Amy's awesome instructions) it's easy AND fun!
The Abalone Shell Hat uses a single skein of hand-painted Crazyfoot to give a subtle mottled color effect to the fabric.
The Nautilus Shell Hat is knit the same way but with Mountain Colors' five-color perspectives Yarn Packs in the same Crazyfoot yarn. Four of the colors swirl around the hat and the fifth is used to knit the crown. The Perspectives colors are hand-dyed solids … and there are lots of colorway choices.
