Often a change of heart means a change of clothes. Our moods lead us right into our closets in search of the appropriate outfit. Feeling sporty? A soft comfy hoodie is in order. Feeling sexy? We want to show off our curves with a body-hugging silhouette and lots of feminine details. With Fickle Heart both inclinations are satisfied in one button-front cardigan. The clingy fabric with cables galore is all woman, while an array of eyelets and the reverse stockinette hood make it breatheable and playful.

Created in collaboration with Malabrigo Yarn for their Freelance Patterns Project.

The easy to wear Bottineau Pullover is perfect for curling up in. The super soft yarn is cozy, but the open cowlneck helps keep you from overheating. A relaxed fit in the body and sleeves is accented by a slip stitch mock rib pattern which draws in to the waist. The oversized cowl is worked in the same pattern with increases to help it lay open. Dress down with jeans and boots, or layer Bottineau over a dress for a cool night out.

Shown in size 36” / 91cm with zero ease. For the best fit, choose the size which is the same or slightly larger than your
full bust measurement.

Dripstones Cowl is a seamless unisex cowl/neckwarmer worked from bottom to top. It starts with 2x2 ribbing, then continues with 2 sets of cables which put together give the impression of dripstones forming in some cave.

The trapeze shape of cowl is created by using different needle sizes.

Pics showcase size M.

I’d been wanting to adapt the stitch pattern from my Mr. Harley Quin socks into a shawl for some time, and imagine my excitement when I found out there was actually a harlequin opal! So perfect! The colorful stone fit perfectly with what I had in mind for this shawl, a pattern that works well with those variegated yarns that have been sitting in your stash that you can’t figure out what to do with. And when I saw my skein of Malabrigo sock in Arco Iris, I knew it was the yarn for this one. What’s also great about this pattern is that it’s really conducive to up/down-sizing. First pattern in my fourth shawl collection - Elements.

Metallurgy, the study of metals. Something about this stitch pattern/yarn made me think of iron and metalwork. This shawl is worked from the center out in three garter stitch “wedges”, the lacy border is worked sideways, joining the body of the shawl as you go. Worked entirely in one piece, with no seaming necessary! The pattern is written for the recommended yarn, but it can easily be up- or down-sized. Essentially, you are going to need half of your yardage to work the edging, so work the body until your desired size and/or you are...

UPDATE 10/23/2011: Pattern revised to include easier-to-read charts.

I thought of this pattern as soon as I cast off for my Katie Socks. I had been trying to figure out what to do with this yarn because it was so soft and pretty and needed some twisted stitches, and then I thought of this. An evening of playing around with some scrap sock yarn and I figured out how to make the ribs work in this. Here is the result. It’s a top-down sock with a garter cuff (that waves a bit with the stitch pattern - which I like). There is no cabling involved, simply twisted rib, increases, and decreases. The pattern...

Quick to knit and fun to wear, these gloves are elegant in their simplicity. Elastic ribbing on the palm side allows a great fit. The edges are worked in the interesting pattern of wrapped bundles. Basic cables run along the top of the glove and create a wonderful texture that is accentuated by beautiful colors of a variegated yarn.

Yarn suggestions: Any bulky yarn or two strands of DK-weight yarn held together will work.

Note: If you do not need a wide thumb for the size L, stay with size M numbers for waste yarn part throughout thumb instructions.

Make these gloves longer by adding another chart repeat before placing thumb.

“Pure mathematics is, in its way, the poetry of logical ideas.”
- Albert Einstein

Elizabeth Zimmerman’s pi architecture for shawls has such a mathematical simplicity to it—double the number of stitches at a halving rate—that pleases the scientist in me. This formula results in a flat circle. To celebrate the mathematical beauty of pi, this shawl uses the simplest of lace patterns. Increase rows disappear into the overall pattern, with one extra increase round at the end to produce a hint of a ruffle. This light and airy small shawl is easy enough to knit while pondering other mathematical...

While hiking the Appalachian Trail on an April morning, leaving from a valley lush with the green of spring, it was hard to ignore that the higher the trail climbed, the less green it got and higher up trees and branches had fewer and fewer leaves, some not having put forth any growth at all.
The shawl depicts the tulip tree as it starts to burst into life in early spring. Starting with the leaves, the unopened buds higher up and finally the border representing the highest branches with the flowers in all their splendor!
