I’m pretty excited about this one, so here it goes…

Remember those “Choose your own adventure books” from years ago? Perhaps I’m dating myself, but I thought they were great and I thought, what if I can design a sock with that in mind? This pattern is the result.

This pattern is for a top-down sock that comes with four different charted stitch patterns: 1) Deep into the forest (photo 3, right-hand side), 2) Look behind the waterfall (photo 4, left-hand side), 3) Under the ogre’s bridge (photo 4, right-hand side), and 4) Down into the canyon (photo 3, left-hand...

Years ago, I took time off of college and went home. I kept my horse at a barn in the mountains and it was there that we discovered trail riding. We would go, almost every day, for a run through the canyon. Up and down hills, through water, around trees, it was fantastic. When I dyed this yarn, I immediately thought of mountains and rivers, and I thought of those trails. It turns out that the name of the creek that ran through “our” canyon is called Aliso Creek, hence the name.

These socks are knit top-down in cable pattern reminiscent of flowing water, with some subtle gusset details. It took...

The first in a new, garden-inspired shawl collection. An alpinarium is a garden that includes plants from the alpine region and in terms of knitting, the alpine region is also known for lovely cable-work.

This heart-shaped shawl is worked “top-down” in one piece and features a combination of lace and cable-work with a lacy, lattice edging. The design is written for a large, high-yardage, skein of sock yarn but includes instructions on how to adjust it for differing yardages. The pattern includes both written and charted instructions.

Please note: The edging chart/instructions begin on the...

Sometimes I dye sock yarn and design patterns to fit, other times I dye yarn to go with patterns. This was a case of the latter. I found this stitch pattern and immediately thought of this color. It took a couple of tries to get the color just right, and some modifications of the stitch pattern to fit a sock pattern, but I’m really happy with the end result.

This is a top-down sock pattern featuring a star toe (my new favorite technique). The pattern includes instructions on how to dye yarn to get this color. I’m not one for pastels, but this one is great. Perfect for Spring...

Named for the Bernoulli Principle: the relationship between the velocity and pressure exerted by a moving liquid; as the velocity of a fluid increases, the pressure exerted by that fluid decreases. I thought this was fitting because this top-down lace pattern features 4 differently sized faux-cable, moving at different “velocities”

This pattern (and color) are sooooo hard to capture in photos. I’ll try to get some better ones tomorrow when the sun is up. They really are lovely.

Bryce Canyon is probably my favorite of the national parks. Growing up my family would go on annual camping trips all over the place and Bryce was always one of my favorite stops. A shawl inspired by this beautiful place had to be first on my list. :)

This is the first shawl in my new four-shawl collection that will be released one at a time between November 2012 and January 2013. There will be four shawls inspired by U.S. National Parks that I visited growing...

I remember the first time I saw Canyonlands. My family was standing at one of the lookouts and my younger brother (who was pretty little at the time) said, “Look, Dad, there’s a crack in the country!” True enough. :)

Canyonlands is a really beautiful place, and the “crack in the country” was carved out by the blue/green Colorado and Green rivers which wind through and set off the lovely red canyon. It took me a while to find the right yarn to embody what these rivers bring to mind, but I finally found it and here’s the result.

This shawl is knit “top-down” with a garter body and a...

The pattern includes both charted and written instructions. Because of the stitch pattern, only one size is included. If you have narrower feet/ankles, I suggest going down a needle size and/or using thinner yarn.

Based on the herringbone stitch pattern from my Clupea Shawl, these socks work up really quickly and look great in a variety of yarns (especially self-striping and those crazy variegated ones we all love and don’t know what to do with!). You can alter the number of repeats of the bands in different ways to change the look of the socks - or even do a Fibonacci sequence with them!

The pattern is designed to be worked top-down but could easily be converted to toe-up. Instructions are written, and include three sizes. The nature of the stitch pattern is such that it produces a tight fabric, so keep this in mind when choosing a size.

About the shawl:
Body (garter section) is worked from the center out, the edging is knit sideways, attaching to the body as you go - Knit all in one piece (no seaming).

Final version of the pattern will include both written and charted instructions, and will accomodate a DK and fingering weight version.

Worried about running out of yarn? Here’s a tip for “fudging” the edging a bit You can occasionally connect the edging to two body stitches rather than just one to decrease the number of edging rows you work - just don’t do this too often...

Every holiday season I try to knit hats for my older brother (the only one in my family who really wears them). This year I was extremely pressed for time and threw this one together at the last minute. I based this square-top hat on my Jacques Cousteau shawl and it turned out great, so much so that I also knit one for my brother-in-law (little brother got a different hat, pattern to follow soon).

Pattern is worked bottom up, and includes written and charted instructions.

Based on my Jacques Cousteau shawl pattern, these highly textured socks work up beautifully with lots of details. A patterned band makes up the cuff and a matching band at the toe. In between there is a section of several cabled/textured stitches reminiscent of a fisherman’s sweater. These symmetrical socks are worked cuff-down, but could easily be converted to toe-up if that’s what you like. They could also easily be worked two-at-a-time.

If you like this pattern, you may also like the Cousteau hat pattern.

Once in a while there’s a project that’s just special, and this one is definitely one of those. When I sat down to chart this one out, all of the math worked out just so easily (that never happens). And when I sat down to try it out with a lovely yarn that wasn’t quite right, Wendee (Hazel Knits) sent me the one I knew would work right away. From the moment I had that yarn in my hands, I was a knitting fiend, and finished this beauty in about two and a half days (and there was plenty of horse-time in between knitting). And when I blocked it, it was just such a beauty.

I’ve been wanting to design a new sock for a while now, but life has been a bit crazy recently. Finally I finished designing my mystery sock (for the Solidsocks Ravelry Group - out in March/April 2010), and I was free to play with some of my other yarn. Here is the result of my most recent efforts.

It is a top-down sock, and it comes with TWO charted patterns - one you see here (chart 1) and its doppelganger (hence the name), the same stitch patterns but combined in a different way. You can choose one or the other, or use one of each - it’s entirely up to you. Also, the pattern is made using wrapped stitches and...

The last four weeks of my life have been CRAZY. Everything was going fine and then all of a sudden I was hit from crazy stuff from all sides. Amidst all of this, I was trying to knit but really needed something calming, easy to memorize and quick to knit. When it came time to name these socks I looked up latin works for “calm” and was totally shocked to find “Equus” was one of them. For those who don’t know, Equus also happens to be the genus name for horses, so I couldn’t resist. :)

I named this shawl because today (and the past few days) it’s been about 70 degrees and sunny here (IN FEBRUARY!!!). Really, the whole winter has been sunny aside from a few days of rain, but now it’s warm as well! Anyway, today it’s beautiful and spring-like out, hence my naming this shawl - the color (the Feb club color) also had something to do with it. :)

So here’s the story with this pattern. I bought this yarn to try and enter a pattern into Berroco’s sock design contest last month but I ran out of time and then got completely side-tracked with my Irate Squirrel Sock idea. I thought and thought about this yarn, the problems with it (the lack of stretch due to its alpaca and nylon content, and it’s lack of stitch definition - not to mention its complete inability to photograph well), and I decided texture with some give was the way to go.

I had seen a stitch pattern similar to this in a book but the one in the book was way...

The first in a new collection, inspired by key figures in science. This one is named for Galileo Galilei, whose major contributions to science include heliocentrism (that the planets revolve around the sun).

Many years ago now, SueHauser tested one of my first shawl designs (Mulled Raspberry Shawl). She loved the “quilted” look to the shawl, being an avid quilter and quilt-fabric shop owner herself, and the test-knit marked the beginning of a long-term friendship between the two of us.

When her first grandbaby was due a few years ago, I designed the Olympic Forest Baby Blanket for the woodland-themed baby room that her new grandchild would have. So, several months ago now, when Sue told me that a second grandbaby was soon to arrive, I offered to design her another one. I toyed with a lot of...

I think I was very small when we went to Grand Teton National Park. What I remember most was the t-shirt my mom had from the park. The shirt was a staple of her camping attire every year. Grand Teton Shawl is the third shawl in my second four-shawl shawl collection (VBM Shawl Collection 2). This shawl is available for individual purchase as well as part of my U.S. National Parks inspired collection, more info here. The last shawl in my “precious stone” shawl collection. Named after lovely blue-green stones, this shawl is asymmetrical with garter and lace bands worked in the center and one side wedge, with the other side worked in a cable pattern on a garter background. Easily adjustable for different yardages, instructions for up- or down-sizing this shawl are included. As with all of my other collections, this pattern includes both written and charted instructions.

ERRATA (updated 7/5/2014):

As with all of the other patterns in the collection, the pattern includes both written and charted instructions.

ERRATA: Charts 1A and 2A are for the leg portion of the sock. Charts 1B and 2B are for the instep portions of the sock. Sorry for the confusion.

UPDATE 10/23/2011: Pattern revised to include easier-to-read charts and instructions for 64-st and 72-st sizes.

These are to be a thank you gift to a friend at my horse barn who has been very kind to me over the past couple of years and who has greatly admired my knitting when she’s seen it. I feel she is among those who would really appreciate some hand-knitted socks. Her favorite color is navy blue, and one of her horses’ names is Gretya. Hence the color/name of the socks.

I designed these on a recent trip, they are top-down socks and work up very quickly. Simple yet...

I’d been wanting to adapt the stitch pattern from my Mr. Harley Quin socks into a shawl for some time, and imagine my excitement when I found out there was actually a harlequin opal! So perfect! The colorful stone fit perfectly with what I had in mind for this shawl, a pattern that works well with those variegated yarns that have been sitting in your stash that you can’t figure out what to do with. And when I saw my skein of Malabrigo sock in Arco Iris, I knew it was the yarn for this one. What’s also great about this pattern is that it’s really conducive to up/down-sizing. I included an extra set of...

UPDATE 10/23/2011 - Revised pattern with easier-to-read charts.

So, you’re probably wondering about the title of this one, here’s the story. My roommate is a bit wacky, and among her quirks is her belief that it is very important to let squirrels know when you see them. Typically this is how this is done: When you see a squirrel on the side of the road, she feels you should shake your fist in the air and yell, “I see you squirrel!” I know this sounds crazy, but it’s really rather hilarious. This fist-shaking is also done for kitty cats, who, much like squirrels, take themselves way too...

UPDATE 10/23/2011: Revised pattern to include easier-to-read chart.

I made this pattern up on a whim while driving almost 3 hours to go hiking a few weeks ago. I had brought a pattern with me but found it way too fussy to knit and so decided to make up my own. These top-down socks are pretty simple, and are named after a friend who really fell in love with the pattern and colors of this kool-aid dyed yarn. The dove in the photos is Octavia, the girlfriend of Ron who posed with my Waterlily Socks a while back.

ETA: These are done entirely with increases and decreases, no cabling involved!...

Leonardo Da Vinci is widely known as an artist, but he also made great contributions to science. Among his many areas of interest was the study of proportions in nature, something that has inspired this shawl, the second in my “Scientists” shawl collection. This shawl consists of three design/construction elements, all worked entirely with garter. These three design elements can be combined in three different ways to create different effects in the final product. You can work this shawl in one color or many, it can be fully customized to whatever yardage you want, the key is the proportions of your yardage that you’ll need for each segment.

Here are links to examples of each configuration:

First pattern in my fourth shawl collection - Elements.

Metallurgy, the study of metals. Something about this stitch pattern/yarn made me think of iron and metalwork. I’ve only been to Olympic National Park once, but there are two things I remember vividly. One was how beautiful the forest was when we walked through, it was so beautifully green that the leaves and everything seemed to almost glow. The second thing I remember was a lake my family and I had decided to try fishing in. The water was such a clear blue-green that you could see down to the bottom of the lake 50 feet out. We didn’t catch any fish, but it sure was beautiful.

This shawl is designed to create a knitted forest using cabling and lace. When I thought of this design, I just had to use this beautiful blue-green colorway reminiscent of the waters there.

UPDATE 10/23/2011: Pattern revised to include easier-to-read charts and instructions for 64-st and 72-st sizes.

Random fact about me: I LOVE paisley. I don’t know why, but I do and have done for a long time now. I am also determined to figure out how to knit cables in a paisley pattern to make myself a cardigan with the design. Alas, I have yet to figure it out (but I WILL!!!). In the mean time, this design sort of reminded me of paisley (hence the name).

So, you’re probably wondering about the name of this one. A Pas de deux in horseback riding refers to when two people ride their horses in different formations, often side by side. The way the ribbing moves in this pattern it reminds me of that.

Pisum, the scientific name for peas. Between teaching basic Mendelian genetics to undergraduates and planting some on my patio, peas have been on my mind a bit. Personally, I think they’re lovely plants (As well as functional!) - not to mention good to discuss for educational reasons! So I decided the last sock pattern in this collection would be named after peas. :)

My first sock pattern! I’ve been wanting to design some socks for a while, and here they are! I really think this pattern would look great in a semi-solid sock yarn. The koigu (my first time working with it) is quite wonderful and while I love this colorway, it doesn’t do the pattern full justice (at least in the photos).

This sock pattern is designed as a top-down sock, but would look great toe-up as well. Also, the pattern is worked over 60 stitches, but could easily be adjusted for larger feet.

Please contact me with any problems/questions about the pattern....

Those of you who have read my profile know that I love horses. In fact, I’ve now been riding for almost 27 years and in all that time I had never heard of Prix Caprilli. I’m not entirely sure how I missed it, but basically it’s dressage with jumps in it - so you do a dressage test (the circles, etc) but also include some little jumps. When it came time to name these fun socks, the crossing back and forth and swirls in the middle reminded me of that. :)

The Quadrille Shawl was inspired by my recent Quadrille Sock design, it combines simple cables, garter, ribbing and k/p stitch patterns to create a very interesting and elegant textural piece. The pattern includes instructions for a small (one-skein, 400 yard) version as well as a larger (two-skein, 750 yard) version. The dimensions are 14(20)” deep, 31(48)” center edge to tip for the small (large) versions respectively.

This top-down sock pattern features a geometric, lacy design that combines a variety of textures and simple cables to create a complicated-looking sock that actually works up quickly while keeping your attention the whole way down. Pattern includes both charted and written instructions.

The second in my “Mosaics” collection, this design features a garter body with a lacy/textured border worked sideways along the length of the shawl (minimal bind-off and great for upsizing!). The “waves” feature three different stitch patterns that alternate, making for interesting knitting the whole way through.

UPDATE 10/23/2011: Pattern revised to include easier-to-read charts.

I thought of this pattern as soon as I cast off for my Katie Socks. I had been trying to figure out what to do with this yarn because it was so soft and pretty and needed some twisted stitches, and then I thought of this. An evening of playing around with some scrap sock yarn and I figured out how to make the ribs work in this. Here is the result. It’s a top-down sock with a garter cuff (that waves a bit with the stitch pattern - which I like). There is no cabling involved, simply twisted rib, increases, and decreases....

While Watson and Crick won the Nobel Prize for their discovery of DNA structure, their work built upon earlier work by a female scientist by the name of Rosalind Franklin. A woman who sadly died young, before the Nobel Prize was awarded. This shawl is a tribute to her, an asymmetrical shawl featuring a “DNA” cable. This design is first worked “sideways” and then the piece is rotated such that the last section is worked “vertically” and connected to the sideways portion as you go. Because of the nature of this shawl, it can be adjusted for pretty much any yardage, and instructions for upsizing are included. The one-skein version turned out to be 48” wide...

This is a top-down pattern with shifting panels of different textures that really show off longer color change and tweedy/woolly yarns.

In case you’re wondering about the name… I had a hard time coming up with a name for this one and I just kept thinking about the color and how a good friend of mine (an avid birder) calls this color “rufus” - and thus the name. :)

The third in my botanically-inspired sock collection: Salix is the scientific name for willow trees, and textured lacy pattern of these top-down socks reminds me of these elegant trees. This pattern works up quickly and is written for two sizes (64-st and 72-st sizes).

The whole time I was knitting/designing this pattern I kept thinking of wrought iron scrollwork designs. Created with cabling, this design has a lot of subtleties that result in a really elegant crescent-shaped shawl.

This pattern includes instructions for a smaller (one-skein) and a larger (two-skein) version of this shawl. The cream-colored shawl in the photos to the left is the smaller version, the grey shawl is the larger version. Note, the larger version will not use all of two skeins (I think I used about 700 yards). The instructions include both charts and written instructions, as well as the schematic you see at the bottom of the pattern photos to the...

These lovely, intricate socks match my Scrollwork Shawl. They are worked top-down in a pattern created by twisted stitches and small 1x1 cables that can easily be worked without a cable needle.

This pattern includes both written and charted instructions and is currently only available in one size, but can be upsized by adding some ribbing to either side of the stitch pattern.

IMPORTANT: Due to the nature of this stitch pattern, the fabric is not very elastic. I highly suggest trying on your sock after knitting a couple of inches of the pattern. You may also want to go up a needle size to get a slightly larger gauge if you’re worried...

The second shawl in my “Astronomy” shawl collection. A shallow triangular shawl with symmetrical sides featuring a faux cable/lace stitch pattern. If you’re curious about the names, do a quick internet search of “solar flare” images. :)

G. Ledyard Stebbins was a botanist and geneticist, and participated in the development of our modern understanding of evolutionary theory. He also happens to have taught at my alma mater at the end of his career and there’s a nearby nature reserve named after him. When this LOVELY yarn first arrived, I had something very different in mind for it, but the sheen was too lovely, the hand too nice for what I had originally thought. It needed something lacy, and the “organic” movement of this pattern reminded me of plants - hence the name.

Knit from the top down, this pattern is done entirely WITHOUT a cable needle. Don’t get me wrong, I love cables, but for whatever reason I don’t like having to deal with cable needles when I’m working on my socks. So, this pattern is done entirely using twisted stitches that twirl around down the sock.

Please note: The instructions for the 3st-cross L stitch are below.

The stitch is most easily worked as follows:

slip 3 to cable needle, rotate 180 degrees counter-clockwise (this will make the third stitch first, the second stitch still in the middle and the first stitch third),...

Update On July 29, 2009 my baby boy turned a year old! He’s now doing really well, getting big and handsome, and we’re nearing the one-year mark of his surgery.

I FINALLY got around to adding a photo of my boy, the “nose shot” was taken on his birthday (party hat and all!). It’s now been over a year since his surgery and he’s doing great! I absolutely adore him. :)

These socks are dedicated to my baby horse, Jonah. Recently my baby had to have surgery after he became very, very sick. He’s still not out of the clear, and I wait anxiously all day hoping he...
