Charmingly simple without being too sweet, these easy fingerless mitts are nice for early spring when there is still a chill in the air. A simple knit-and-purl texture spirals around the mitts in a diagonal pattern, growing organically from the cuffs. This creates a nice effect on one side of the mitts where textured stitch meets plain stockinette on the diagonal. You may choose to wear these with either the diagonal or the fully textured side facing “out” on the back of your hand. The stitch pattern looks “right” any way you choose to wear them.
This pretty pullover is a lovely update to your basic everyday t-shirt. A clean turned under hem and princess seam shaping give this top a fitted, feminine silhouette. An arc of pointelle graces the front neckline with a single line of pointelle continuing around the back neck. Simple set-in cap sleeves complete the polished look. Our organic yarn is soft enough to wear next to your skin so you can enjoy this little piece throughout the spring and beyond.
Help keep those cute little legs warm with these adorable petite leg warmers! A tiny cable runs up the side of each leg and matches our Aspen mitts for mom. Knit in our organic washable merino in sport weight, these are lightweight, cozy and itch free.
Special thanks to Melissa from Dandilion Girl designs for crafting this lovely collection of baby and mommy items.
This simple raglan cardigan deserves to be a staple in every knitter’s wardrobe. Worked in one piece from the top down, the sweater features reversible front borders and elegant shaping. The hourglass texture of our Ava cowl gives a nod to the Art Deco era. Let it drape around your neck or wear it in the evening, simply stretched around your shoulders for a sophisticated alternative to a wrap. Knit in the round, this little project moves along quickly with just enough interest to capture your attention. Our Sophia Mitts have a touch of the same hourglass texture. Pair these two elegant ladies together for a matching set.
Baby doesn’t have to look babyish in this classic, cozy pullover. When knit in one of our organic yarns it’s soft and warm enough to fall asleep in. The Baby Regiment mimics our men’s version with scaled down simple stitch detail running up the center of both saddle shoulder sleeves. A clean roll neck keeps things simple for baby. This is a great unisex style that will be a hand-me-down for years.
This adorable little bear is both a loveable toy as well as a tiny security blanket. She is modeled after a favorite “lambie” blankie that two of my sons adored as toddlers. The bear head and arms are knit and stuffed, and then her skirt simply becomes a small square blanket - not the kind you wrap up in but the kind that tiny hands can grasp onto and snuggle with, chew on, and take with them everywhere they go! Of course, if knit in blue or soft grey, this ballerina could just as well be a favorite boy’s blankie as well.

In French, “bienvenue” means “welcome.” Welcome to a break from complicated patterns and lifestyles. The Bienvenue Pullover embodies simplicity. Inspired by traditional Aran sweaters, but simplified to the essentials, this sweater is a great introduction to cable work. This simple bottom-up raglan pullover features a striking woven cable panel down the center, while the back and sleeves are just simple stockinette. The knitting on Breakwater will keep you interested, but not overwhelmed. This fit of this sweater works equally well on both guys and gals. The unisex pattern is sized to fit both.

Traditional fisherman sweaters told a unique story about each family and town they represented. This classic baby blanket has the look of the traditional stripe patterns found in our Swans Island blankets. A simple linen stitch is used throughout to impart a woven look to the face of the fabric. The back side of this fabric has an equally interesting texture that looks like seed stitch, so there really is no “right” or “wrong” side. After the knitting is complete, you may choose to embroider on our Swans Island “weaver’s mark” — the sign of authenticity and the symbol that you have created a true, handcrafted heirloom.
The clever closure design is what sets this style apart from other shawls and scarves. The fabric is constructed mainly of simple ribbing with one ribbed cable placed in the center to add an element of stitch interest. Two slits worked on either side of the cable at the narrowest point in the wrap allow the wearer to simply tuck one end of the wrap under the cable to keep everything firmly in place. More sophisticated than tying a knot and more convenient than adding a shawl pin this clever detail makes the Cable Wrap unique.
Everyone that sees these simple mitts says “Oh - can those be mine?” It’s funny how sometimes the simplest things can evoke such a response! I made these three sets using tonal color combinations of our classic Natural Colors merino. You could have fun mixing any of our naturally dyed merino colors or add in one of our versatile neutral blends in Seasmoke or Oatmeal for infinite great stripe combinations. With three different lengths to choose from, the possibilities are endless. Make a pair for each of your friends - they’ll all want one!
There’s just something about garter stitch that makes it the perfect choice for a classic baby cardigan - clean, simple, and easy to knit. This basic cardigan is worked back and forth in rows so that the only stitch you need to know is “knit”. The rippled ridges of garter stitch create a cozy texture without overwhelming the little person who will wear this piece. Seven buttonholes down the front can be worked on either the left of right placket, making this quick knit cardigan a great basic for either a boy or a girl. If you are making a gift and are not quite sure yet …...
Made with our soft washable organic merino, this set makes a wonderful, quick gift. Pair any of our pastel colors with one one of our classic neutrals for sophisticated stripe combinations. There will be enough yarn left after you knit the hat to make this sweet little cat as well. His striped sweater is designed to match the hat, and his simple shape and embroidered face are reminiscent of homemade toys of another era. A secret embroidered heart on this tiny cat adds to the delight!

Whether you dress it up with a strand of pearls or dress it down with a pair of jeans, the Charlotte Cardigan is a classic. Elegant details include rolled edges, clever faux side seams and pretty pointelle holes at the raglan armholes. Worked from the the top down, there is no seaming so once you’ve bound off, you’ll be ready to head out the door.
I made this classic boatneck pullover for my daughter when she was just a newborn baby, 14 years ago! I reknit the same garment in our Swans Island organic merino fingering, and this classic style still looks just as cute. (Not on her of course!) If you want a classic garment that can be worn by a baby boy or girl, this is a good choice and can be handed down from one baby to the next, or perhaps even to the next generation. There is very little shaping on this garment so it’s a straight-forward knit with just enough stitch detail up the front and back to keep the knitting interesting.
Inspired by the long time favorite cardigan of a friend, the Chelsea will be a workhorse in your sweater wardrobe. The slight A-line shaping to the body gives this piece a very gentle swing. A plain stockinette stitch ground is framed with simple seed and garter stitch borders at the hems, cuffs, and plackets. Worked here in a neutral beige, this cardigan is a quintessential classic knit. We know you will enjoy yours for a long time to as well.
This adorable stuffed Beluga is a simple treasure for you to enjoy making and sharing. Knit in the round with basic stockinette stitch from nose to tail, she has elegant shaping details and a sweet embroidered smile. Not your average scarf, this knit version of a classic bandana is just a big triangle that can be worn “frontwards” or “backwards” — you choose. Simply tie in back of your neck with the point in front and the triangular piece will fill the gap left by your open jacket quite nicely. Wear it with the point in back and fasten in front with a casual knot or a chic shawl pin. A border of stockinette outlines garter stitch with a neat little row of pointelle stitches dividing the two.
Simple. Chunky. Scrumptious. This cowl is quick, fun and easy to make. Two skeins of bulky, super soft merino work up super fast to let Clara snuggle you in her soft embrace in just one afternoon! Easy to memorize, Fisherman’s rib pattern provides thermal warmth with a great modern day graphic texture.

A panel of sinuous cables winds its way down the top sides of these fingerless mitts, while a no-nonsense rib helps to keep the underside snug. Reminiscent of a vine tracing its way up a garden trellis, the placed cables are fun and slightly challenging to work. With only a thumb gusset for shaping, these mitts are fairly simple, with just enough stitch detail to keep them interesting – the perfectly portable project. Wear them while enjoying a cup of tea on a chilly fall afternoon.

If you are ready to move up from basic garter stitch rectangular scarves, this project might be just the thing for you. Worked side to side, most of the knitting is done in simple garter stitch. You’ll just need to learn a few new basic stitches to increase and decrease and you’ll be on your way to making this very cool bandana. Tie the triangle casually, as shown on our model, or add two buttons to keep the scarf securely and neatly in place when the winter winds begin to blow.

Erin is charmingly simple. Starting with a clean rolled edge, this hat spirals to its peak in a manner reminiscent of the swirl of a periwinkle shell or a Turkish minaret. Spiral ridges are created with a simple combination of a slipped stitch, an increase and a decrease. A bit of i-cord at the top, tied into a small knot completes the design.

Our charming little blankie is just the right size for babies on the go! We love this little knitting project as it doesn’t take forever to complete and doesn’t need as many skeins as a “regular” sized baby blanket. We’ve shown it here in our soft organic merino/alpaca but were so smitten that we made it again in our washable wool (because, being mothers ourselves, we do know that not all babies are careful enough to keep their blankies spotless!) The pattern is the same for both yarns, but the size will vary slightly according to gauge. No matter - this little square is just big enough to cover...

If you are looking for a really basic pullover, this is the one. If you want to make something simple and classic, you can’t go wrong with this sweater. A friend of mine asked for a basic crew for her son, something that looked like the other basic crew he had outgrown, but loved early and wore all the time. So we made this. I had both of my own sons and a nephew try on the sample. We had ladies try it on too. They all wanted one of their own. So if you want something that will last and be loved for a long time, make this! Nothing fancy — just your basic crew.

Katherine…deceptively simple, yet delightfully interesting. Not your ordinary V-neck, this sweater is loaded with elegant detailing. Shaping at the “princess seams” creates an hourglass silhouette. A branch of pointelle graces each cuff and the back hem. Single strands of pointelle define the neckline and shoulders while subtle shaping creates gently curved sleeve caps. You can make bracelet length sleeves as shown or lengthen as you see fit. Katherine is sure to become one of your best friends.

Nearly as light as a cobweb, this airy long loop is a breeze to knit. Simple tiny bobbles line both edges and are scattered symmetrically throughout the fabric. The lace weight yarn is knit on a larger-than-usual needle size giving the stockinette stitches a very open, elegant feel. This cowl has the flavor of lace, without any actual “lace” knitting required. A good amount of silk in this yarn blend gives our extra long cowl a luxurious drape. This classic scarf was inspired by the traditional stripe patterns found in our Swans Island blankets. A simple linen stitch is used throughout to impart a woven look to the face of the fabric. Exquisitely fine in its craftsmanship, this scarf is a true classic. With impeccable attention to detail and a fine drape, this piece elicits “oohs” and “aahs” wherever it goes. Not for the faint of heart, this scarf has very fine linen stitch borders and a main field of double brioche stitch. This is not a quick and mindless knit. Modeled after a favorite basic we admired in a magazine, this wardrobe staple will serve you well year after year. A twisted rib construction creates a gentle shawl collar which is worked in as you go along leaving minimal finishing to do at the end. We’ve added one great vintage button to finish off this classic cardigan.
When a Nor’Easter hits New England it’s time to batten down the hatches. Our Nor’Easter hat can withstand the heaviest of weather. Knit with a cozy, simple rib construction this hat has a snug fit. The rolled up brim keeps ears toasty with a double layer of soft merino wool. The Nor’Easter looks great on guys or gals.
This clean and simple hat features a band of graphic snowflakes with a nod to classic Nordic-inspired designs. A basic garter stitch band creates the edging. If you are just beginning or want to try some easy two-color knitting, this project would be a good place to start. Knit in the round, you carry the floats across the back of the work, through the charted section and then go back into easy stockinette for the crown shaping, ending with a small “stem” at the top.
We loved the idea of a hooded vest for early fall and Therese Chynoweth has come up with this gorgeous interpretation. Allover cables meander up from the edge into an allover cabled hood that really sets this vest apart. A diamond cable and bobble pattern frames the placket to add even more knitting fun.
This airy and feminine infinity loop is a wonderful springtime accessory. Drape loosely around your shoulders as shown, or double it up around your neck for a bit more warmth on those early spring days. Rows of easy to work Feather and Fan stitch create concentric circles of texture that get farther apart as they near the edges of the piece - like rippling waves on the water.
Inspired by classic cabled Aran fisherman sweaters, this updated version may just become be your next “go to” sweater. A graceful cable panel adorns the front, while a single cable extends the length of the sleeve and up over the saddle, raglan shoulders, the slightly boxy silhouette gives a casual, comfortable fit that works equally well on a guy or gal. The unisex pattern is sized to fit both.

This extra long scarf is knit on extra large needles so it works up quite quickly. With an “old school” look, this scarf goes with just about anything. The jumbo Fisherman’s Rib stitch has a thermal effect, but is still loose enough that you might wear this in the early fall or late into the Spring. Worked with two strands of fingering held together, the oversized stitches have a very fluid drape. Add the tasseled fringe for a playful look or leave it off for a slightly more masculine effect.
Katherine Hepburn might have worn a sweater like this — elegant, and just a bit sporty. The Olympia Pullover is one of those basic sweaters you’ll reach for again and again. Refined, classic and simple; like a Greek column. The two by two rib construction gives your curves a slight hug but the weight of the bulky yarn lets this garment hang with a bit of gentle drape. Turned up cuffs and a minimalist neck trim make for a clean and modern finish.
This hat is waiting for your design details and inspirations to take shape on its ground of simple stockinette stitch. For the more creative enthusiast, it calls out for embellishment – duplicate stitches or experimental embroidery; for the minimalist, just leave it plain. The sample hat features an embroidered snowflake, crocheted edging, and two-colored ties with a “sprout” at the crown – creating an understated, yet whimsical look. Follow the instructions as given or dream up your own version. The Open Book hat is a great addition to any knitter’s library, and its flexibility makes customized gift making easy.
