Tulip Field Socks PDF

Designed by Amy Loberg (FiberWild!)

The second pattern in our Sock of the Month “World Traveler Series”!

Bonus: Buy any HiKoo’s CoBaSi yarn at our online store www.FiberWild.com and get this pattern for FREE!

Knit from side to side, the Tulip Field socks have long color blocks inspired by the beautiful tulip fields near Amsterdam. With lots of fun knitting techniques like an intarsia join and short rows, they are a great skill builder. These socks are fun, bright, and you will probably never see another pair of socks like these!

Finished Foot Length: Small 7 ¾” (Medium 9”, Large 10 ½”) slightly stretched

Finished Foot Circumference: 7” (8”, 9”) unstretched

Needles: (2) US 2 (2.75mm) 24” circular needles

Hook: Size C (3.00mm) for provisional cast on

Materials: Shown in HiKoo CoBaSi (55% Cotton / 16% Bamboo / 21% Nylon / 8% Silk: 220 yds/50g)

Yardage: Green: 220 yards, Red: 110 yards, Purple: 100 yards, Yellow: 100 yards, Pink 100 yards. (1 skein each of 5 colors)

Notions: 2 stitch markers, scrap yarn for provisional cast on

Skill Level: Intermediate

Notes on the Construction: These socks are knit from side to side, starting with the sole and the back of the leg. The sole is knit in one color and the back of the leg is knit in stripes. As each row is worked, where there is a color change at the ankle, the different colored strands of yarn must be twisted around each other in order to join the 2 colors. This method is called intarsia join. Instructions are provide only on the first few rows. On all rows that have 2 colors in them, the strands must be twisted at the color change or a hole will appear. See the chart at the end of the pattern for color patterning!

The toe shaping and heel shaping are achieved by first adding and decreasing sts. Additional heel shaping is achieved with short rows. Once the sole and back of leg are complete, the top of the foot and front of the leg are worked and all rows have only one color! After grafting the cast on sts to the last row of worked sts, the toe is seamed and sts are picked up for the cuff. It can be helpful to weave ends in as you go!

Sizing: There are 2 adjustments to the size of the pattern. The first is foot length. The pattern is written with 3 lengths. To determine foot length, measure foot from toe to heel and choose the size just under the actual foot measurement. The second sizing is circumference. There are 3 sizes provided for this measurement. In order to achieve circumference, the pattern is written for the largest circumference and row will be omitted for smaller sizes!
