The emerald islands and bright, aquamarine waters of Biscayne National Park features jeweled coral reefs, mangrove forests and tropical beaches. This National Park emcompasses Biscayne Bay and its offshore barrier reefs just south of Miami in the Florida Keys. Beautiful beaches provide nesting grounds for sea turtles ... and the reefs and waters harbor more than 200 species of life, including 16 endangered species!

95% of the park is covered in water, making most of it accessible only by boat. Visitors can camp, watch wildlife or snorkel their way along the underwater Maritime Heritage Trail which links dive sites, including six shipwrecks. The calm waters also offer divers a view of dolphins, manatees and sea turtles ... which are the inspiration for our Biscayne Bay Socks!

Sock of the Month: “Colorado River” Socks

Explore Grand Canyon in our "Colorado River Socks" ...
Featuring Dream in Color's Smooshy with Cashmere yarn!

The Grand Canyon in northern Arizona, is one of the largest canyons on earth.  The immensity of its landscape is hard to grasp … even when viewed from the best vantage points accessible in Grand Canyon National Park!

At the heart of the 277 mile long canyon runs the Colorado River, whose course through the area was established 5 to 6 million years ago. Since then, the river has been at work creating depths over a mile deep and widths up to 18 miles wide ... and it's still going! It is no surprise that this awe-inspiring canyon is a holy site for the Native Americans who have continuously inhabited the area for thousands of years.

The Colorado River Socks pay homage to the powerful river that helped shape this natural wonder. To celebrate one of America's favorite parks, our friends Nancy and Veronica at Dream in Color yarns created this gorgeous custom color reflecting the beautiful hues of the canyon ... and then road-tripped to take some terrific pictures!

Visit the Sled Dogs in our "Muldrow Socks" ...
Featuring HiKoo's Sueno Tonal and Sueno yarns!

Denali National Park in southern Alaska is turning 100 this year and we're celebrating with the beautiful "Muldrow Socks" named for one of the largest and longest glaciers in the park.  The gentle, cool colors and flow of the lace pattern reflect the feel of giant glaciers moving down the mountain side!

The Denali National Park gets its name from the tallest mountain in North America, rising to 20,310 feet within it's borders. Denali is an Alaskan native Athabaskan word meaning “the tall one” or “mountain-big”.  The park also features a spectacular mix of forests, tundra, and several glaciers. Hundreds of species of plants and animals fill the park, including grizzly and black bears and herds of caribou just to name a few. Over 400,000 visitors are awed by the beauty of the place every year!

Worked from the toe up with two colors, the Muldrow Socks have flowing lace patterns and small ribbed panels. A generous ribbed cuffed completes the look while keeping the sock in place.

The heel is worked last and is constructed as an "after-thought" heel.  "After thought" you ask? First you work the toe, then the foot, knitting up the leg and the cuff ... and then you go back and work the heel.  It sounds harder that it is ... any intermediate knitter will have no problem! ... and learn a new sock knitting technique!

Finished Size 7 (8", 9") approximate foot circumference
Yardage 180 (210, 250) yards main color, 52 (55, 60) yards contrast color

HiKoo Sueno Tonal and Sueno

Sueno Tonal and Sueno are soft wool and bamboo blends that have wonderful stitch definition making them perfect for cables and textured stitches. These yarns have just the right amount of spring, which lends to a variety of gauges.

We used the beautifully subtle Sueno Tonal for the main body of this sock and a solid Sueno for accent on the toes, heel and cuff. There are tons of gorgeous colors to choose from ... which can sometimes be overwhelming ... but no worries! We put together five fabulous color combos that will look great in the Muldrow Socks. If you have any color questions that we can help with, please give us a call!
