National Parks Centennial
As early as the 1800s, Americans began calling for preservation of our scenic natural wonders, and in 1916, Congress created The National Park Service to fill that roll. Expanding over time to include military parks, national monuments, national parkways, seashores, and—by the 1960s—urban parks, the National Park System now numbers close to 400 national parks.
