Sock of the Month: Scottish Heather Socks
Roam the Moorlands in our "Scottish Heather Socks" ...
Featuring HiKoo's Sueno yarn
Two things come to mind when you think of Scotland ... fields of wild heather and kilts! Amy did not design a knitted kilt pattern (maybe one of these days) but she did create a pair of beautiful socks inspired by both the heather flower and traditional kilt hose!
The perennial flower Heather has played an important role in the history and symbolism of Scotland for centuries. It's branches have been used for everything from roofs to ale and is an important food source for the moors' wildlife, including native sheep and deer.
Kilt Hose are traditional woolen stockings worn knee high and folded to create a thicker cuff. Before the invention of knitting, these socks were made of woven cloth. Knitted stockings became the norm in the mid-nineteenth century because they stay up on the legs much better.
The Scottish Heather Socks incorporate both the colors of Scotland's heathered moors and the design of kilt stockings into a modern sock. The tall legs and decorative tops are perfect to wear with fall boots. Knit in three colors of sport weight, machine-washable Sueno Yarn, these boot socks are perfect for both men and women. So grab your needles and get ready for a sock knitting trip to the beautiful country of Scotland!

The Scottish Heather Socks start at the top with color blocked stripes and a lovely cabled cuff. The wide ribbing on the leg and foot is both attractive and makes for an excellent fitting fitting sock. The toes and afterthought heels are knit in the same color as the cuff stripes, giving the socks a cohesive color story that reflect the beautiful hues of Scotland's glen. You'll love wearing these sturdy but soft socks all winter long!

Sueno is a cozy soft, wool and bamboo blend that has wonderful stitch definition. It's great for cables and textured stitches, and it has the perfect amount of spring, which lends itself to a variety of gauges. Choose from any of the gorgeous colors and create snugly socks, a cozy cowl, or super soft children's garments!
Amy used Plum, Slated and Evergreen to evoke the colors of the moors, with fields of wild heather and moody skies, but these socks would look great in lots of other combos. We put three suggestions together below. Or browse the 30+ colors of Sueno we have available and build your own color palette.
