The Evolution Shawl KAL – And the Yarn is 20% Off!

The Evolution Shawl

Last year, Skacel sponsored the first season of “The Fiber Factor,” where independent knitwear designers competed for world fame. This year, the most knittable designs are being featured in a series of Knit-Alongs!

The November KAL will be lead by Rachel Henry, the designer of the awesome “Evolution Shawl.”  Rachel knits every day, and her video introduction features many of the places where she knits.  But with all that knitting it is comforting to see that she still has a shelf of baskets filled with UFO’s!

So what is the Evolution Shawl?  Rachel writes:

This heart-shaped shawl follows the evolution of a knitter. It begins with garter stitch, representing that garter-stitch scarf so many of us knitters began with. Then a bit of stockinette, as the beginner knitter learns to purl. Once the basic stitches are mastered, textured patterns like the diamond pattern become possible. Then … cables are not that hard … and a try a bit of simple lace.

Each pattern builds on the last; each pattern is made up of knits and purls, manipulated to form apparent complexity. But, one stitch at a time, all knitting is conquerable. The final stitch pattern combines right-side and wrong-side pattern, cables, twisted stitches, lace, and unusual decreases for a gorgeous exuberance that flares all around the edge of the finished shawl.

During the Fiber Factor competition, Rachel knit her shawl in Zitron’s Unisono and in HiKoo’s Rylie … we are featuring the Rylie yarn.  Rylie is a luxurious natural blend of baby alpaca, mulberry silk and linen.  The linen adds a rustic look, baby alpaca adds softness, and mulberry silk adds drape and a hint of sheen. I like the shawl in a soft neutral, especially the Rylie Sandbar, Pearl or Driftwood … or pick your favorite from the 10 available solid colors.

Bonus:  We have the Rylie yarn on sale at 20% off!

The Evolution Shawl in Rylie

The gauge of the shawl is approximately 20 sts and 32 rows = 4” x 4” in stockinette stitch (blocked), and the finished size is about 85” across the top and 30” deep at the spine.

Each week a video will be posted with Rachel offering tips and tricks for knitting this great shawl. Rachel will also be fielding questions about her pattern on the “The Fiber Factor” forum on Ravelry.

So how much is the pattern?  It’s free!  Click here to download your free copy now!

There is no registration or cost, simply download the pattern, get your supplies and check out Rachel’s video starting on November 3rd. Don’t hesitate to call us if we can help with your yarn, needle or notion selections.

Here are the materials you will need:

Yarn

Rylie yarn in Periwinkle

The Evolution Shawl is one size, and is knit using HiKoo’s sport weight Rylie yarn – 50% Baby Alpaca / 25% Mulberry Silk / 25% Linen. 274 yards / 100g skeins. Three (3) skeins are needed for the shawl.

Needles
You will need a set of US #7 (4.5mm) 40” circular needles. As always, adjust the needle size you need to achieve gauge. Exact gauge is not crucial for this project; however, it can affect yardage needed to complete the shawl. To save time, check your gauge and read all instructions thoroughly before beginning.

Notions
You will also need a tapestry needle, a couple of stitch markers and a locking stitch marker.

Pattern
It’s Free!  Download your free pattern here.

The KAL starts on Monday, November 3rd and will go for about six weeks.  You’ll be finished before the holidays!  Here is the weekly schedule:

Monday, November 3rd – Cast On, Sections 1, 2 and 3
Monday, November 10th – 3-4 transition and Section 4
Monday, November 17th – Sections 5a and 5b
Monday, November 24th – Section 6a
Monday, December 1st – Sections 6b and 6c, Cast Off

Need more incentive? You will also have the chance to win great prizes generously furnished by Skacel Collection. Skacel will be randomly selecting three lucky winners who post pictures and information about their finished projects on Ravelry. The project must be started in November and be completed by December 20th.  Winners will be announced on Skacel’s “www.TheFiberFactor.com”, and on Ravelry. Prizes may include Limited Edition addi needles, addi Click Starter Sets, and yarns from HiKoo!

The shawl is perfect for gift giving – or knit it for yourself!

Happy Knitting! . . . . Amy
