Kits – The Perfect Gift to Give (or Get!)

The Stockton Sock Kit

Remember the childhood excitement of getting an awesome gift under the Christmas tree – and then the bitter disappointment when you realize that Santa didn’t bring any batteries?  You would have to wait until the next day for your parents to buy some batteries so you could play with your new toy!

I get the same feeling when someone gives me an awesome yarn – but no pattern!

So that’s why I like our kits – especially for gift giving.  You get the pattern and the yarn in one cute little ready-to-get-knittin’ package – all you have to do is get your needles and start knitting.

We’ve put together a list of 18 kits that are great to give or receive.  Here are some of my favorites:

  • Got a cell phone addicted teenager?  The
    Ruffled Crocheted Wristlet

Braid Back Wristlet kit is perfect for cold weather – a little something to cover your hands while keeping your fingers free to call or text!

  • Don’t forget the crocheters!  The Ruffled Crocheted Wristlet is both feminine and functional with a pretty optional ruffle along the edge.
  • Tired of knitting foofy, lacy socks? The Stockton Sock Kit is a warm compliment to your outdoor wardrobe – a plain workhorse of a sock without any lacework, cables or strange new stitches to stumble over.  Made of locally produced yarn, these socks are perfect for the long, cold winter ahead.
  • Who doesn’t need a little magic?  The Magic Princess Set uses HiKoo’s fun Abracadabra yarn that changes color when you go into the sunlight.  Choose the hat, leggings, purse, or all three.  They’re white in the house, but step into the sunshine outdoors and pink and purple stripes magically appear.
  • Sometimes you just gotta knit silly.

The Felted Ewe Knitting Kit is absolutely adorable!  The I-cord legs and arms are made first, then the body is worked in the round attaching the arms and legs as you go.  The kit even includes fiberfill to stuff your new little friend!

The kits are especially nice for our non-knitting friends to give us.  They don’t have to fret about whether it’s enough yarn or the right kind of yarn.  Just send them a link to our Kits to Make or Give page, with some fairly obvious hints about which kits you like best, and you won’t be taunted with a pattern that you can’t start immediately!

Knit A Caribou Critter – The Perfect Gift!

Touch the buttery soft and fluffy Hikoo Caribou yarn and your mind starts to scream “Teddy Bear!!!”  Designer CiD Hanscom agrees, and the moment she got her hands on Caribou she started thinking of patterns for cute, huggable critters!  Using one strand each of HiKoo’s Caribou and Simplicity (for added body), CiD has created Caribou Critters in three adorable patterns: a cheeky monkey, a playful puppy and a “hug him tight” teddy bear.

Caribou is a novelty yarn you have to touch to believe.  It’s a super bulky yarn that is light and feathery soft. It comes in neutral tones and fun pastel colors!

The feathery soft Caribou yarn!

Simplicity is one of our most popular yarns – a buttery soft, superwash wool blend, and we’ve got over 60 colors to choose from!  Your friends at Ravelry have posted over 1,000 projects made with Simplicity!

Bonus:  We’ve got Simplicity on sale at 20% off!

The combination of Caribou and Simplicity results in a furry friend that is completely washable.  I didn’t realize how important this was until our team member Suzy (the Shepherdess) had “Baby Number Two”.  That kid was a barfer!  He puked more in his first three months of life than most people do in their entire life.  Suzy  was constantly doing laundry!  Some of his toys were ruined, but his Caribou Critters could be thrown in the washing machine with the rest of his nasty clothes, and came out smelling like a rose and ready for more hugging!

So which Caribou Critter do you want to knit first?

Is it a Felted Pumpkin Hat?

You have no idea how many people see this pumpkin in the store, and ask “Is it a Hat?”  I usually tell them it’s just a decorative felted pumpkin.  But then I ask … “If it was a hat, would you wear it?”.  I have found only one person who said she would … to a Halloween party.  Must be some party!

Anyway, the felted Connecticut Pumpkin is an inexpensive knitting kit, just in time for Halloween.  If you have never done felting, this is a perfect project to give it a try … easy to knit, and if you slip a stitch, or miss gauge, the felting will hide the mistakes and it’s JUST A PUNKIN!

The finished pumpkin is about 8″ tall (including the stem), and 12″ in diameter.  Knit on US 10.5 circulars and double point needles, it is an intermediate skill level pattern.  The kit has just the right amount of orange (pumpkin) colored yarn, and green yarn for the stem.

For those of you who must have a pumpkin hat, or think it would be a hoot at your Halloween party, the pattern can be easily modified to fit your ‘noggin.  Maybe your significant other would wear it?!!  Take a look and make one for the party!
