Learn lace knitting - featuring HiKoo's Rylie yarn - 20% Off!
Master lace knitting one section at a time. Building with Lace is the third book from renowned knitter and teacher, Michelle Hunter!
Building with Lace
This book has a carefully designed sequence of patterns that introduce knitters to lace work starting with the basics and working towards more difficult patterns. Following the same format as Michelle’s earlier books, Building Blocks and Building in Color, Building with Lace is the long awaited addition to this educational series!
All patterns are supported by Michelle’s excellent, and free, online video instruction.
The shawl starts with a provisional cast on for an applied border. Following this, are nine progressive lace patterns with garter stitch edges and rows of garter stitch between each section to give them each a nice frame. Beads are used in one of the patterns and on the borders. Once finished, you will have a gorgeous sampler shawl to showcase your lace knitting skills!
22" wide by 72" long
1260 yards (5 skeins)
5 x HiKoo Rylie (in one color)
Samples shown in Driftwood, Pearl and Kelp
24" US 6 [4.00mm] circular needles OR size needed to obtain gauge
22 sts and 29 rows = 4" x 4" in Stockinette
US F [4.00mm] crochet hook to cast on
US #12 or #14 [0.75mm or 1.00mm] crochet hook used for bead placement
Easy - Intermediate
A note on beads: Beads are added in Section #5 and in the borders. Look for high-quality beads with a consistent barrel opening. Bring your yarn when purchasing the seed beads to ensure that a doubled strand will slip through the bead using the crochet hook.
Gauge is extremely important in this project from a yardage standpoint! When knit to the recommended gauge, the shawl uses five skeins of Rylie with approximately 110 yards / 40g remaining. While the shawl doesn’t actually have to “fit”, properly sized stitches will use the recommended amount of yarn. Larger stitches use more yarn, potentially causing a shortage. Take the time to knit a swatch to assess the stitches, and change needle sizes if necessary.
HiKoo's “Rylie” is a unique, luxurious natural blend yarn. Linen adds a rustic look to Rylie, while the baby alpaca adds softness and the mulberry silk adds drape and a hint of sheen. Great for any season, this sport weight yarn would make a soft cozy shawl or fun unique top.

Kaffe Fassett Afghan KAL
by Kaffe Fassett
Inspired by bold geometric tile designs, Kaffe's afghan design achieves his iconic look without any complicated colorwork. If you are an intermediate knitter, you will enjoy this project while building colorwork skills!
The afghan has a total of 48 squares knit from 13 unique patterns, plus a border and will be made using intarsia colorwork techniques. The layout of the squares flows around Kaffe's instantly recognizable tumbling block design. Each square is then placed to achieve the maximum geometric impact.
Did we talk about Kaffe's colorways? ... they are simply amazing! For this KAL, he has crafted only one simple yet effective colorway that captures his distinctive Kaffe signature. But choices are good! We have over 50 colors of Rowan's Pure Wool Worsted ... so if you would like to substitute colors, we have all the project details in the "Materials" section below ...
