It is our pleasure to work with Patty on her upcoming Tortola Sweater KAL! Patty has taken the idea of a KAL to a whole new level ... think of it more as an online class with how-to's and videos for the price of a pattern!

No mystery here ... we have posted a ton of pictures of both the Cap Sleeve and Tank Top version of this amazing sweater below! You can even knit the sweater with longer sleeves ... Patty will be posting pattern modification notes so you can make 1/2, 3/4 or long sleeve lengths!

The KAL started on February 20th and runs through mid-April.

You will need a supply of either the Lana Grossa: 365 Cotone or 365 Cashmere yarns. Both yarns are mostly cotton with a touch of polyamide for strength ... but the 365 Cashmere has a helping of soft cashmere to give it a little more luxury. Check the sizing below for the number of balls you will need ... don't forget the needles and notions!

Registration is easy, simply purchase the pattern along with your yarn!  You will be automatically registered for the KAL ... just remember to add the pattern to your Ravelry Library during the download process!

Keep all your options open ... buy an extra ball or two! ... especially if you want to make the longer sleeves! You will also need some yarn to swatch ... maybe you are just a “tight” knitter? Running out of yarn can be a real pain.  Getting more yarn, in your color, with the same dyelot can be impossible! Purchase an “insurance” ball. We're glad to accept returns on full, unused balls of yarn!

Charity Knitting

Are you a charity knitter?
If so, kudos to you -
we raise our needles to you!

I have a friend who obsessively knits scarves for the homeless.  Sit idly next to her long enough and she'll hand you some yarn and needles and tell you to get knittin'!  The scarves must be a minimum of 8" wide (to cover mouth and nose) and long enough to wrap around the head.  Her scarves are donated to the homeless by Carpenters Place in Rockford.  She also knits hats, mittens and infinity scarves (no ends to get caught on playground equipment!) for Rock House Kids, a Rockford mission that helps at-risk kids.  The idea is that it's easier to help a kid now than to try to repair a broken adult later ... makes sense!

If you are not already a charity knitter, it's easy to start.  The list of organizations that need knitters is endless, but start close to home.  Does your local hospital need baby caps?  Does a local church need blankets or scarfs for a mission?  Does a local nursing home need pads or pillows for wheelchairs?  Find out what they need first, before you take up your needles.  Some organizations will only take items made with specific patterns or specific yarn, while others will take anything.

Another charity knitting idea is to knit what you want and then sell your knit goods at a local event, silent auction or craft show and donate the money to a charity.  You're not restricted to any organization's specifications - you can knit whatever you want!  Charity knitting-for-sale also means you can donate to any charity.  Some organizations don't have a need for knit goods, but any charity will gladly take the money donated from your knit goods sale!

Sale yarn is always fun, but it's especially great for charity knitting.  Right now for a limited time FiberWild! has Zen Yarn Garden and Classic Elite yarn on sale, plus ChiaoGoo needles and addi needles all at 20% off to help you get started.

But here's a little secret . . . . we almost always have something on sale, so be sure to check out our Sales tab at the far right of our website page.  Items marked "Clearance" are often 30% or even 40% off ... an even greater value for your volunteer knitting time!

Happy Knitting ... Scout
